5 tips for getting the most out of your insulin pump

1. REGULARLY MEASURE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR

Regular measurement of blood sugar (BSU) levels is one way to improve diabetes management. Check your blood glucose level before every meal and enter the reading into the built-in Bolus Wizard calculator in your insulin pump. The Bolus Wizard¹ Calculator will calculate the amount of insulin needed per carbohydrate intake to bring your CK back to your target (if your CK is high). Regular measurement of the level of SC allows you to determine episodes of hyper- and hypoglycemia and, accordingly, take the necessary measures to return the level of SC to the target values.

If you think your insulin pump settings need to be adjusted by your doctor, we recommend that you check your blood pressure at the following times:
§After walking
§Before eating
§After eating (after 2 hours)
§Before bed
§During sleep (every 3-4 hours)

2. USE THE BOLUS WIZARD CALCULATOR BEFORE EVERY MEAL AND AT EVERY BLOOD SUGAR TEST

The Bolus Wizard¹ feature significantly reduces the incidence of hypoglycemic episodes caused by multiple boluses or too much insulin to correct hyperglycemia.

3. ACCURATE CARBOHYDRATE COUNTING

Errors in calculating the amount of carbohydrates in food are a fairly common problem. Since the Bolus Wizard¹ Calculator calculates insulin for every gram of carbohydrates consumed, accurate carb counting can greatly improve blood sugar control. If you need help from a dietitian, ask your doctor for advice.

4. USE A CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING (CGM) SYSTEM

If you have frequent episodes of hypoglycemia, or if you have impaired sensitivity to hypoglycemia, use the LMWH system. The Minimed 640G insulin pump has a built-in function to stop insulin delivery before hypoglycemia occurs ( Suspend Before low ). This feature prevents more than 80% of hypoglycemic episodes ( 2015 SmartGuard study data 2 ) without significantly increasing the frequency of hyperglycemic episodes.

5. CHANGE CONSUMABLES

Change the infusion set, reservoir, and infusion set site every 2-3 days. If you are using a MiniMed 640G insulin pump , you can set your pump to remind you to change your infusion set. Be sure to change the site of the infusion set – this is necessary for skin repair and optimal absorption of insulin. To find the right infusion set and placement that best suits your needs and lifestyle, consult your doctor.
