Sweet for diabetes: what diabetics can do, recipes

You have to reject your favorite foods and choose something that did not seem so tasty before. However, today there are many ways to please yourself, even if the diagnosis turned out to be frightening.

A sharp increase in blood glucose levels is fraught with coma – which is why diabetics should not eat foods that provoke this increase. Among them are desserts with sugar or molasses.

The two forms of diabetes are caused by different internal processes in the body. So, in the first type, insulin is not produced by the pancreas, so diabetics have to inject themselves with the missing hormone. The second type is characterized by insufficient production or the body’s immunity to insulin. In this case, injections do not help. What can diabetics do with type 2 is on the list of prohibited foods for type 1 diabetics. It is best to rely on individual consultation with your doctor. Obesity is a separate issue, because in this case, the list of allowed treats may be further reduced.

Can diabetics have sweets?

An ailment such as diabetes significantly affects the daily routine, diet and lifestyle of the patient in general. It is not easy to get used to this, and it is even more difficult to forget about the sweets that you used to enjoy. The use of sweets for diabetes mellitus is permissible, but – of certain varieties and in very small doses. In addition, it is required to strictly follow other recommendations:

  1. Avoid stress;
  2. Adhere to the correct meal schedule;
  3. Don’t forget about walking;
  4. Introduce regular exercise;
  5. Travel, etc.

The diabetic should always have a small piece of candy, chocolate or lump sugar with him, as this will quickly stop hypoglycemia if it happens. But this cannot be abused.

Hypoglycemia and its symptoms

Every diabetic should immediately determine the moment when a small amount of sweets should be eaten. Life often depends on it. Symptoms:

  1. Limb tremor;
  2. Increased sweating;
  3. Sharp hunger;
  4. Blurred vision, turbidity and fog;
  5. Increased heart rate;
  6. Headache;
  7. Tingling sensation in the lips.

A portable blood glucose meter is a great way to always know exactly what’s going on. But when it’s not there, it’s worth trying to eat a handful of raisins, suck on a sugar cube, or otherwise raise your glucose levels. Sometimes the hypoglycemic state is caused by prolonged exposure to the injection of insulin. In this case, it will not be superfluous to use a product corresponding to 1-2 XE: a slice of roll or white bread, a little porridge, etc.

How to choose a treat

When choosing sweets, you have to simultaneously analyze several indicators and carefully study the composition. The most important points:

  1. Glycemic index – shows how quickly carbohydrates are broken down, provoking a jump in blood sugar;
  2. The amount of carbohydrates and fats;
  3. Amount of sugar, sucrose or fruit sugar.

There are special tables for calculating the glycemic index of different foods. Usually in large supermarkets there is a specialized department where you can pick up a delicacy created without sugar – on fructose or sugar substitutes. However, in this case, one cannot immediately acquire what seemed tempting. It is safest to consult with your doctor. Definitely prohibited for every type of diabetes:

  1. Cream cakes;
  2. Butter rolls;
  3. Cakes;
  4. Preserves and jams;
  5. Fatty cookies;
  6. Caramel;
  7. Chocolate candies.

Type 1 diabetes means completely avoiding sugar-containing foods.

In type 1 diabetes, it is mandatory to exclude:

  1. Sugar juices;
  2. Soda;
  3. Fruit drinks;
  4. Margarine cookies;
  5. Any cakes and pastries;
  6. Honey and honey products;
  7. Jam, jam.

Sweets are replaced by foods with fiber and complex carbohydrates, which are digested slowly and contribute to an extremely slow rise in glucose levels. When sugar cravings are overwhelming, doctors recommend:

  1. There are dried fruits (in very small quantities);
  2. Use products from the dietary department;
  3. Eat sugar-free sweets or pies;
  4. Replace sugar with stevia.

Most sugary treats are best cooked on your own so you know exactly how much sugar is in them. If the products contain starch, then they should be treated with caution, this substance increases the amount of glucose in the blood. Diabetics with type 2 diabetes can eat a small amount of sweets in the morning. In this case, the following are excluded from the diet:

  1. Sugar baked goods;
  2. Sweet yoghurts with fruit pieces;
  3. Condensed milk;
  4. Preserves and jams;
  5. Candy;
  6. High GI fruits (bananas, grapes);
  7. Compotes and juices with sugar and sweet fruits;
  8. fruit drinks.

You can replace treats with diabetes mellitus:

  1. Mussami;
  2. Jelly on xylitol;
  3. Sorbet;
  4. Casseroles.

The amount is always strictly controlled, since a verified diet significantly improves the patient’s condition. Insulin-dependent diabetics most often can use dried fruits, some types of sweets, ice cream, cakes and pastries prepared with sweeteners. With the second type, diabetics can do all of the above, plus sometimes ice cream equal to 1 bread unit can be added to the diet. This is usually a standard buttercream with no fillers or additives. Popsicles are most often prohibited by doctors, they contain fruits and sugar syrup, which is completely unsuitable for diabetics.

Sugar substitutes

Sweeteners significantly help to reduce the craving for sweets in diabetes. Diabetics are allowed:

  • Fructose (no more than 50 grams per day);
  • Xylitol (E967);
  • Glycyrrhizin – produced from licorice root (E958), this sweetener is sweeter than regular sugar;
  • Sorbitol (E420).

If a blood sugar test is to be done, food should not be eaten eight hours before, and sweet foods, even with sweeteners, are not recommended to be eaten twelve hours before the test.

Stevia is another naturally occurring sweetener. It has a specific taste, but it does not harm diabetics. The plant extract is often added to diet meals.
